How to Choose Filters for Water Treatment Filtration
1. Know your raw water
Test turbidity, TSS, particle size and chlorine level. A 50 µm depth stage on heavy sediment protects every finer stage downstream.
2. Stage the filtration
Raw water stage → 5 µm pre-filter → carbon (if needed) → 1 µm final. Each stage extends the next one’s life 3–5×.
3. Match the micron to the duty
Coarse intake 20–50 µm, RO pre-filtration 5 µm + 1 µm, final polishing 0.5–1 µm. Never overspec fine where coarse protects.
4. Size for flow and pressure
Worked example: 200 GPM process line at 30 psi available head — four 40-inch pleated cartridges at 10 µm with 2–4 psi clean ΔP leaves comfortable margin.
5. Plan the change schedule

How often should water treatment cartridges be replaced?
Typically 3–6 months, but the real trigger is pressure drop: change when ΔP rises 10–15 psi above the clean reading, or on the calendar, whichever comes first.
Pleated or depth cartridge for raw water?
Heavy sediment: depth (string-wound) holds more dirt. Lower turbidity: pleated gives lower ΔP and longer run at 5–20 µm. Many plants run depth first, pleated second.
