How to Choose Filters for Metallurgy & Steel Filtration
1. Map the circuit
Hydraulic oil, roll coolant, furnace water and lube oil need different micron targets. A 3 µm hydraulic element is wrong for a descaling line.
2. Set the micron to the valve
Servo circuits need 3–5 µm absolute elements; standard mill hydraulics run 10 µm. Match the element to the clearance, not the oil brand.
3. Match media to temperature
Paper and glass media fail in furnace loops. Sintered metal or stainless mesh handles 150–400 °C where pleated paper cannot.
4. Size for flow and pressure
Worked example: 200 GPM roll coolant at 40 psi pump head. Six 40-inch pleated cartridges at 25 µm give 3–5 psi clean ΔP with margin for scale loading.
5. Change on ΔP, not calendar
Mill scale loads fast. Track differential pressure and swap elements when it rises 10–15 psi above the clean reading.
